Jim Cushman, founder of Cushman Motorsports, has been an avid motorsports enthusiast for 2 decades. With a history in
drag racing and high performance experience stemming from his early days of racing with the likes of Billy Glidden in the NMCA,
Jim has seen and done what many simply imagine. Originally a small block Chevrolet fanatic, Jim has since been converted to
the Ford world, and more specifically, the Modular Engine platform.
In 2000, Jim's younger brother Scott held a position at Sean Hyland Motorsports At the time, SHM was the staple of the Modular development. Jim became intrigued by the potential of Fords latest engine platform, and sold his local grocery business, to join
SHM for approximately 2 years.
January 2003, Jim was approached by a businessman based out of Lansing, Michigan . This gentleman had a company called
VT Competition Engine Development. He wanted to get into the modular Ford market, and had heard of the knowledge and service reputation Jim had built. Jim agreed to join on and develop the mod motor program for VT. He focused on parts and engine
development as well as building a customer and supplier base. Shortly after, Scott elected to leave SHM and was quickly offered a position at VT. With Jim and Scott united once again, things did not take long to explode. Jim designed a line of 2v camshaft grinds
for VT , that to this day, are some of the most demanded profiles on the market. Jim and Scott spent countless hours building the
name of VT on the internet, with exceptional service, and products second to none. Each and every engine built at the VT shop located
in Lansing Michigan was spec'd out by Jim and Scott during this time, and the power numbers were starting to make ripples through
the tight knit modular community. Big power, big service, and great pricing grew VT to the premiere facility for modular engine clientele.
VT Competition Engine Development then sold its assets to Chris Bower, due to time constraints with the owner of VT Competition Engine Development. Chris then started VTEngines, and kept the engine staff and location, as well as hired on Jim and Scott to
continue to build the name and reputation. During the tenure that Chris owned VTEngines, the company continued to increase in
sales volumes. VT had successfully become an icon. The company was known in all avenues of the performance industry, not
just Modular (and Ford) specific. Jim raised the bar in the mod motor world when his personally designed bigbore stroker laid
out an earth shattering 1448Hp/1077tq with just 21psi of single turbo power. Jim's combo is set to be the fastest 10" tire modular
in the world, and should be on track summer of '08. Scott developed and designed his own naturally aspirated engine, pioneering
the destroked approach to the 5.4L based engine. The engine exceeded 700Hp and continually saw excess of 10,000rpm's
through the traps in his World Record holding Mustang. To this day, Scott still holds the title of World's Quickest and Fastest
naturally aspirated engine, on just his first engine combination.
Jim and Scott's power making formula's where called on by many big name racers in open track, as well as the drag racing communities. Steve Matusek, owner of Aeromotive Inc, contacted Jim to go over details for a twin turbo Pro5.0 car based on the
5.4L modular engine. After flying up to Michigan to consult with Jim and Scott, Matusek followed the advice and destroked his
own 5.4L turbo engine. At his first NMRA race, Matusek's '07 Mustang set a new NMRA world record in Pro5.0, something
unheard of for a Modular engine.
VTEngines came into financial difficulties, leading to the selling of the assets. Jim was notified by the original owner that the equipment was sold to a third party, along with the name VT Competition Engine Development. Despite numerous attempts to
merge the 2 entities together (VTEngines & VT Competition Engine Development), all parties were not successful and parted ways.
Not long after the dismantling of VT, Jim was inundated with requests to start his own company, so he could continue to deliver
the parts, service, and knowledge, that he used to make VT a world wide known commodity. Jim started Cushman Motorsports in December of 2007. After 5 years of making VT what is was, Jim elected to build his own company, so he could have total control.
Jim has been concentrating on the online parts commitments, but has plans to branch out into complete engines as well. Look
for BIG things from Cushman Motorsports in 2008, and in the years to come. Just when the competition thought they could breathe easier, Cushman is back, and better than ever.
